On November 20, 2024, the National University of Medical Sciences held an important meeting at the NUMS Secretariat to review and strengthen its measures for smog mitigation and emphasize actions towards the changing climate. Maj Gen Farrukh Saeed, HI(M), (Retd), Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academics), and Maj Gen Muhammad Salman Ashraf, HI(M), SI(M), (Retd), Pro Vice-Chancellor (Administration), chaired the meeting along with senior management representatives from the university.
Dr. Hina Shan, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health, began the meeting with an insightful presentation on smog mitigation and its detrimental environmental impacts. She highlighted the elements contributing to smog formation and outlined the proactive measures NUMS has already implemented. Dr. Hina suggested coordinated efforts in line with the NUMS Environmental Stewardship Committee (NESC) and emphasized leveraging NUMS’ nationwide presence to raise awareness and drive climate action. She presented a phased implementation plan supported by a robust monitoring and evaluation system, stressing the urgency of immediate action at the university level.
Her well-organized presentation sparked an engaging Q&A session and generated valuable suggestions. The meeting concluded with Pro Vice-Chancellors commending NUMS’ management for its strategic approach.
