Anti-Drug Awareness Campaign

As part of a nationwide initiative by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to launch anti-drug awareness campaigns across academic institutions, the Department of Student Affairs at the National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS), in collaboration with the ANF and the Department of Clinical Psychology, organized an Anti-Drug Awareness Campaign on Thursday, 17 April 2025, at the PWD Campus.

The campaign was aimed at educating students and faculty about the escalating issue of drug abuse among youth, promoting preventive strategies, and fostering a collective sense of responsibility toward creating a drug-free academic environment. The program also included an awareness walk as a symbolic commitment to this cause.

The event commenced with reciting verses from the Holy Quran, followed by the National Anthem of Pakistan. A skit presented by the students of Clinical Psychology powerfully depicted the harmful impact of drug addiction and set the tone for the day's message.

On behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rizwan, head of the Department of Clinical Psychology, warmly welcomed all the esteemed guests, faculty members, and students. He highlighted NUMS' commitment to student well-being and social responsibility.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr Zara Kiran, representative of the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), on the topic "Drug Abuse: A Menace; How to Counter It." She addressed the audience with deep concern over the growing prevalence of substance abuse among youth, stating, "Pakistan's youth are the torchbearers of our nation's future, and it is our collective responsibility to protect them from the scourge of drugs."

Dr Kiran emphasized the dangers of synthetic and chemical drugs, such as ecstasy, and raised awareness about trends in indoor cultivation and drug processing. She also discussed the national and religious imperative to reject drug use and maintain a lifestyle of health and dignity. Highlighting the broader implications, she pointed out how drug-related offences have negatively affected Pakistan's image globally, including challenges faced by students in securing international opportunities such as visas. She called on students to become ambassadors of awareness and change in their communities. Assistant Director ANF thanked NUMS for arranging this awareness session. He proposed potential collaborative research projects with ANF and internship opportunities for NUMS students to enable meaningful participation in this vital cause.

In closing remarks, Director of Student Affairs Brigadier (R) Muhammad Asif Chattha expressed his sincere gratitude to Dr. Zara Kiran and the ANF team for their impactful contribution. He reaffirmed NUMS's commitment to supporting national efforts in combating drug abuse, stating, "Healthy youth are the backbone of any nation, and through collective efforts, we can ensure our academic institutions remain drug-free."

The event concluded with a spirited awareness walk led by the Director of Student Affairs and accompanied by distinguished guests, faculty, and students. The walk served as a powerful demonstration of unity, determination, and shared responsibility in the fight against drug abuse.
