The National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) joined Zero Waste Forum(ZWF) as a strategic partner at the Global Zero Waste Forum 2025, held from October 17–19, 2025, Istanbul, Türkiye. As NUMS celebrates five years of its environmental stewardship, this partnership marks an important milestone.
Organized by the Zero Waste Foundation, under the patronage of Her excellency Ms. Emine Erdoğan, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and the United Nations (UN), the Forum marked a landmark event in global efforts toward sustainability, circular economy, and climate resilience. Dr Adeela Bashir, lead for project Zero Waste (ZW) NUMS represented NUMS at this global event.
The inaugural Global Zero Waste Forum brought together over 60 distinguished speakers, senior officials from the UN and various international bodies, 100 country representatives, and 118 organizations invited by ZWF as partners. The three-day event served as a global platform for policymakers, academics, business leaders, and sustainability experts to discuss actionable strategies for a zero-waste future under the theme: “Zero Waste in Action: People. Places. Progress.” Throughout the Forum, participants engaged in dynamic sessions on waste management, food loss prevention, sustainable production and consumption, green finance, smart cities, zero waste education, and international cooperation. The discussions emphasized turning the zero waste vision into practical solutions that foster social, economic, and environmental transformation worldwide.
NUMS was invited by the ZWF for this partnership as a recognition of NUMS role in promoting ZW. A letter of intent was signed by representatives of ZWF and NUMS on this occasion to further advance the shared objectives. The Global Zero Waste Forum 2025 provided participants an opportunity to strengthen their network with global sustainability leaders, opening new pathways for impactful collaboration in environmental education and policy. The event ended with the Istanbul Declaration on Zero Waste 2025, adopted by ministers and delegates from more than 100 countries reaffirming the principles of UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/77/161, which promotes ZW initiatives globally.
NUMS is committed to play an active role in the global ZW movement, and to collaborate with national and international organizations to advance research and innovation for a sustainable future. This will help NUMS to contribute towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 17 (Partnership for Goals).
