NUMS ORGANIZES ANNUAL INTER- COLLEGE DECLAMATION CONTEST TO PROMOTE ART OF COMMUNICATION

Vice Chancellor National University of Medical Sciences(NUMS) Lt Gen Wasim Alamgir, HI(M) Tuesday said that art of communication was the core of every profession and that was what, we were endeavouring to promote by organizing annual NUMS inter college declamation contest-2023.

 

The Vice Chancellor was making his concluding remarks as the chief guest, at the conclusion of a day-long declamation contest organized by NUMS Department of Student Affairs, held at the Army Medical College auditorium. The students hailing from NUMS constituent and affiliated colleges from across the country participated in the contest and gave arguments for and against on a number of topics including, “Unity and Islamic Ummah”, “Do we learn from history or it is just record of facts”, “Gender equality,” “All human are equal in dignity and honour” and “Silence over tyranny is destruction of the nation.”

 

Pro VC NUMS (Acad) Maj Gen Saleem Ahmed Khan, HI(M) (Retd), Pro VC NUMS(Adm) Maj Gen Syed Ammar Reza Hamdani, HI(M)(Retd), Principal Army Medical College, Maj Gen Farrukh Saeed HI(M), Maj Gen Suhail Amin, HOD Orthopaedic Department CMH Rawalpindi and Dean and Commandant Armed Forces Post Graduate Medical Institute, Maj Gen Ahsan Altaf Satti, besides a large number of AM college students, its faculty and NUMS faculty members attended the event.

 

Appreciating both boys and girls who won applaud from the audience by their oratory in English and Urdu speeches, Lt Gen Wasim Alamgir said, he was impressed by the standard of communication, expression and delivery of speech. The confidence of the students was outstanding, he said, adding all of them should learn to communicate effectively as it was required in every field of life. He said if you look at history, all great leaders were good speakers hence it is imperative to achieve expertise in communication to excel in life. It was heartening to listen to their debate over variety of subjects, he added.

 

The Vice Chancellor gave away trophies to the two top teams. English and Urdu Jury Members were invited from reputed higher educational institutes of Islamabad to choose the winners after two rounds of Declamation and Extempore. Army Medical College Rawalpindi won the winning trophy whereas CMH Lahore Medical College and Institute of Dentistry got the runners-up trophy.

 

Ms. Qanita Cheema from CMH Kharian Medical College got the First position in English Declamation whereas  Ahmed Tariq from Army Medical College Rawalpindi stood Second. In Urdu Declamation Ms. Ayesha Siddiqua from Wah Medical College stood First whereas Mr. Khawar Habib from Army Medical College Rawalpindi stood second.

 

In English Extempore Ms. Horiza Batool from CMH Lahore Medical College and Institute of Dentistry got first position whereas Ms. Hafsa Shahbaz from Army Medical Rawalpindi got second position. In Urdu Extempore Mr. Abdullah Noor from Quetta Institute of Medical Sciences stood First whereas Mr. Abad Ur Rehman from Wah Medical College stood second.

 

In their speeches and forceful emotive discourses, the students emphasized the need to speak out against tyranny and quoted examples from history and referred to the valiant struggle by the people of Kashmir in Illegally Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir for their inalienable right to self-determination and Palestinians for their separate homeland in the Middle East. They brought forth many damaging aspects of acquiescing to tyranny and not working for self-reliance of the nation. God help those who help themselves, they added. Those who do not learn from history, do not progress and are doomed, they said, adding many people have massive potential which needs to be tapped for the development of the country.

 

Iqra Zafar from NUMS spotlighted rights of women in Islam and said Muslims should learn from the example of the holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in this regard who was very respectful to women. Tara Sher Khan of NUMS said instead of waiting for another tragedy to happen, the people should speak out against tyranny. Waqar Younas of NUMS called for a positive, instead of negative thinking as it was required to unleash the potential of the human mind.
