Since the 1980s, people worldwide have celebrated October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This annual campaign aims to raise awareness about the disease. Known as “Pink October,” it encourages individuals to wear pink and display pink ribbons to emphasize the importance of prevention and regular screenings for early breast cancer diagnosis.
In this context, the National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS), in collaboration with Pink Ribbon Pakistan and BS Emergency & Clinical Medicine students, organized a Breast Cancer Awareness Session on 30th October 2024 at the PWD Campus. This session aimed to educate female faculty, staff, and students about early detection, prevention, and the significance of self-examination and annual screenings. The program motivated female students, faculty, and staff to prioritize their health and support the women around them. The university hosted various activities, including speaker sessions, pink tea stalls, distributing breast cancer awareness brochures, displaying pink ribbons and banners in prominent university areas, and conducting an awareness walk.
The awareness session began with reciting the Holy Quran, followed by the National Anthem. Dr. Ghazal Furrukh, HOD AHS, delivered a welcome note. Assistant Professor Dr. Uzma Awan led the awareness sessions attended by faculty members and numerous female students. During her talk, she urged participants to spread knowledge about breast cancer within society and raise awareness among others. She emphasized that women over 40 years old without risk factors should schedule a clinical breast examination and an annual mammogram. The session included presentations on breast cancer, screening methods, and self-examination techniques, followed by a question-and-answer session.
The Dean of SSH and HOD of the Department of Psychology expressed gratitude to the speaker and participants for their engagement in the session. She also acknowledged the Department of Student Affairs for organizing seminars on social and related issues, which help foster awareness among faculty and students. The event concluded with faculty and students participating in an awareness walk.
