NUMS Department of Public Health takes keen interest in equipping students with practical knowledge of the field in addition to their academics at the institute. With reference to the memorandum signed last year between the Integrated Health Services (IHS) and NUMS Department of Public Health, National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS), a group of students from NUMS Public Health Department took part in a week-long certificate course on School Health Services. In continuation of this course the students decided to effectively utilize the knowledge and experience gained by conducting similar awareness sessions in different educational Institutes with the aim of creating a healthier community.
In accordance with SDG no 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG no 3 (Good Health & Wellbeing) the students of the NUMS Department of Public Health conducted an awareness session regarding “Good Hygiene Practices and Assessment of Nutritional Status of Students” in ROOTS International School, PWD Rawalpindi on 17th April 2023. The session started with brief talk on topics particularly concept of food plate, importance of physical activity, hand washing technique and personal hygiene practices. Children participated in activities like river bank and matching cards for junk and healthy food. Clean vs unclean hands sanitation practices for germs transmission of the school were also carried out by the students to practically apply the learnt information. In the second session to assess the nutritional status BMI was calculated by taking weight and height measurement of all the participants through applying standardized methods.
The school administration appreciated and acknowledged the efforts of the students of NUMS Department of Public Health for conducting such an interactive session on an important health issue.
The coordinators of this important activity were Dr Tamkeen Nishat Jaffry; Associate Professor Public Health and Ms Rubab Zulfiqar; Lecturer Public Health. Four to Five students from each Batch of BSPH participated in this activity in a well-coordinated manner. Head of the Department, Prof. Dr. Uzma Hassan, appreciated the initiative taken by the NUMS Department of Public Health. She also motivated the students to carry on with their efforts aimed at making this community more educated and healthier with better informed choices.
