Under the auspices of the UNESCO Chair on Knowledge Systems for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), students from NUMS actively participated in a National Workshop organized by the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) as part of the Pakistan Water Week 2023. The event, themed "Transformative Approaches" for the future, occurred on December 7 – 8, 2023, at the Pak-China Friendship Center in Islamabad. Its objective was to raise awareness and facilitate knowledge exchange among youth, providing a platform for students to articulate their vision for a water-secure future.
In the Poster Competition, held as part of the workshop and contested by 50 students from various universities and colleges nationwide, Ms. Nida Rafaqat, Ms. Myra Shahbaz from batch 2020, and Ms. Sara Maqsood from batch 2022, students at MUMS AFPGMI Campus and members of NUMS Arts and Media Society, secured 1st Position. They were awarded a cash prize of Rs 50,000/-. The competition's theme, "Causes, Impacts, and Preemptive Strategies to Prevent Flash Flooding," underscored the commitment of the youth to address crucial water-related issues, aligning directly with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
Notably, these students had the unique opportunity to present their work directly in front of Mr. Ahmed Irfan Aslam, Pakistan's federal minister of water resources. The overall event, featuring competitions, debates, and water board games, garnered participation from universities across Pakistan. The event's success was greatly attributed to the support of sponsors, including PCRWR, IWMI, UNICEF, Islamic Relief Fund, Water Aid, and the German Corporation.
Participating in Pakistan Water Week was a valuable experience for NUMS students, fostering collaboration and promoting awareness about sustainable water practices.
