PhD Biological Sciences

Mission statement

This Ph.D. degree program aims is to develop human resources in the relevant field of Biological Sciences by training the PhD researchers primarily focused on the study of living organisms, such as human genetics, microbiology, molecular medicine, immunology, drug discovery and natural products.

Program Outcomes:

At the end of their PhD course, students will be able to:

• Apply knowledge of molecular approaches involved in development of diseases in clinical medicine to bring benefits to humanity.

• Relate how changes in normal cellular metabolism leads to diseases or effected by the diseases.

• Evaluate the real problems of their field to find the real time solution with multidisciplinary approaches beyond traditional clinical investigations.

• Develop skills in self-directed planning, management and implementation of research.

Program Objectives

The educational objectives of this doctoral program are:

• Mastery of advance knowledge in biological sciences including molecular mechanisms and their involvement in development and progression of diseases.

• Develop investigative skills and experimental approaches to elucidate research problems in the molecular basis of human diseases and generate new scientific knowledge.

• Understand the role of advanced research in clinical decision-making, analyze the finding critically and search for new discoveries in diseases and find solution through the application of molecular tools.

• Effective communication, enhancement of writing, presentation and publication skills.

• Strengthen medical and translational research with latest advancements to cope with the specific problems related to economic needs of the country for health sectors.

• Establish institutional collaborations with national and international organizations in order to address the common issues relating to public health reforms.

Career Prospects

This integrative program will ultimately lead to the application of molecular biology in medicine in Pakistan and will raise awareness about the use of modern techniques/tools in order to manage treatment and prevention in due course. After getting PhD degree, the graduates will have diverse research and training opportunities to equip themselves with multidisciplinary approaches for better management of disease. The graduates will have opportunities in research institution, academic institutions, research centers of hospitals, technical advisory, pharmaceutical industries, forensic agencies and veterinary research institution.

Eligibility/Admission Criteria

a. CGPA Requirement: Sixteen/Eighteen years of education in relevant field with minimum CGPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0 in the semester system) or First Division (in the annual system) in the most recent degree.

b. Testing Requirement. Admission test will be taken as per HEC policy. GRE/GAT General.

c. Academic Statement of Purpose. Each applicant must submit an Academic Statement of Purpose (ASOP). The Academic Statement of Purpose helps the admission committee understand student’s academic objectives and determine whether he/she has the potential to be successful in this program.

Unless otherwise noted 1-2 pages in a standard font and size is typical.

The Statement of Purpose should have four sections, though they don’t need to be clearly defined as sections in the document and can take on the more natural feel of a letter:

1) Academic & Professional Preparation

2) Focused Interest in the Field

3) Career plans upon completion of the program

4) Any relevant strengths or weaknesses in background or ability to carry out professional responsibilities.

• Merit computation for graduate’s programs shall be as follows:

Duration of Program & Scheme of study

The Program outlined below attempts to identify the courses needed for PhD in Biological Sciences. The course work will be for two years in case of students entered in program after 16 years of education, while for students entered after 18 years of education, it would be of one year. There will be four/two regular semesters of 16 weeks’ duration (without examinations) and 48/24 credit hours have to be completed in four/two semesters (Credit for prior coursework for not more than 50% of the total credit requirement of the program). At the end of four/two semesters, a comprehensive written examination (Part-A) will be conducted for students with 3.00 or more CGPA and qualifying score will be 65 % or more. The student will enter in the research phase of thirty credit hours. The student will present the synopsis (Part-B) within the three months after qualifying the comprehensive written examination Part- A. Finally, for the doctoral program, an extensive research experience will be taken.
