MS Bioinformatics

Introduction:

This program has been conceived in light of the framework of the Higher Education Commission, Pakistan for the Master of Science in Bioinformatics program. The degree program is designed to provide our post graduates (PGs) an opportunity to acquire advanced bioinformatics knowledge that is required for a researcher to interpret and decipher the information embedded in complex biological processes. We envision that our program will provide a research-based educational platform for researchers where they will be provided state of the art research facilities and opportunities to meet the research standards nationally as well as internationally.

Why Master of Science in Bioinformatics at NUMS

The curriculum designed for Master of Science in Bioinformatics will prepare master students to cope with the issues for wide spectrum of areas including genomics, transcriptomics, pharmaceutics, structural biology, computer aided drug designing and biotechnological industries. The post graduates (PGs) will play a vital role in designing novel diagnostics and targeted research strategies which will ultimately benefit the society. The main benefit of this program is to save time and cost of future researcher by predicting the outcome of their research as well as helping them in analysis of big data. Hence, this program will make a bridge between “in silico” and “in vitro” scientists to deal with future challenges in the field of biology and medicine.

Mission Statement:

To train the next generation of professionals to gain advanced knowledge in the field of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology that is required to design and implement novel approaches to solve the unsolved puzzles in life sciences.

Program Outcomes:

This program will enable students to:

  • Use cutting-edge bioinformatics technology and computational approaches in practical applications.
  • Apply hands-on expertise in principal algorithms, software, and databases in bioinformatics.
  • Translate knowledge from interdisciplinary fields (computer science, mathematics, statistics, engineering, and biological sciences) to analyze genomic and clinical data.
  • Analyze high-impact research articles to comprehend original research in bioinformatics.
  • Design, develop, and execute individual research projects through critical thinking.
  • Develop independent conversational and writing skills that will help them communicate their work at different oratory platforms such as symposiums, scientific meetings, poster presentations and in the form of published articles and research dissertations.
Program Duration:

This Master of Science program extends over a period of 2 years/4 semesters of study and research.

Program Objectives:

This program aims to prepare students with necessary knowledge, skill, and aptitude to:

  • Comprehend the concepts of modern bioscience and their practical aspects.
  • Develop the skills necessary to conduct research in today’s competitive world.
  • Gain knowledge and understanding of biological data with an emphasis on genomics, proteomics and transcriptomics.
  • Efficiently work with Big Data (NGS).
  • Identify novel drug targets and subsequent validation.
  • Train in computer aided drug/vaccine designing.
Career Prospects:

For graduates who would like to join the job market both in academic and industrial sectors post their Master of Science studies will have plenty of options, such as to become:
