NUMS Department of Biological Sciences

HOD's Message:

In keeping with the Mission of the National University of Medical Sciences, the Department of Biological Sciences strives for a transformative learning experience of our students by endorsing active learning, scientific reasoning, and critical thinking. We maintain a rigorous academic environment in which the potential of every student can be realized. A culture of team building, and scientific collaboration is promoted through small group learning that encourages active participation and interaction of students with faculty and fellow classmates. We believe in experiential learning that integrates theoretical knowledge with hands-on practical application and skills. A 33,000 sq. ft. research laboratory at the NUMS Institute of Advanced Studies and Research (NIASR) being set up at Rawalpindi will support our student research. Although a new University, we already have a faculty of over 35 PhDs in various domains of Biological Sciences, each with a rich research background and experience, dedicating to providing mentorship for our students for a successful professional career for life after NUMS.

I welcome you to be a part of the NUMS learning experience at the Department of Biological Sciences.

Vision:
To exemplify the NUMS motto “understanding and improving life” through education, research and innovation within the scope of Biological Sciences.
Mission:
The Department of Biological Sciences at National University of Medical Sciences is a multi-dimensional academic unit that encompasses diverse areas of biology, including cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, immunology and bioinformatics. Our curriculum has been designed to train our students in scientific rigor, technical know-how and reasoning skills. We believe in nurturing a multidisciplinary environment for both undergraduate and postgraduate students by offering a combination of social sciences and humanities education to broaden their scope of knowledge. Courses in logic and philosophy have been integrated to instil critical, interpretive, and behavioural skills in our students.
Objectives:
  1. To provide a strong foundation in Biological Sciences through quality instruction, curricular innovation and experiential learning.
  2. To inculcate in our students the ability to think critically, analyse, synthesize, and use information for problem solving.
  3. To develop written and oral communication skills for dissemination of scientific information.
  4. To produce socially responsible individuals sensitized to the ethical issues in biological sciences and its applications.
  5. To provide a platform for innovative solutions for indigenization of broad-based scientific challenges.
  6. To enable students to pursue careers as:
  • teaching faculty and researchers for academic institutions, in both basic and applied fields of biological research.
  • researchers, technologists and technicians in various sectors including health, pharmaceutical and food industries, government and private research institutes, diagnostic laboratories.
  • entrepreneurs who can commercialize innovative ideas into successful start-ups and businesses.
Future Programs:

The Department of Biological Sciences will soon offer the following academic programs:

  1. MS Nanomedicine
  2. PhD Biological Sciences
Research facilities:

After your undergraduate program the next stage is to pick your graduate university, which is a place to obtain training and become an independent scientist. Success in our mind is when you give yourself the best foundation to capitalize on any future opportunity that may come your way. Joining a graduate program, one should pick a place where you are going to have maximum support and resources for skills development in emerging fields. If you are interested in applied research where you can learn a variety of techniques needed to get the training for your specific careers, then join us. Our labs are equipped with state-of-the art high-tech research facilities for, microbial and mammalian cell culture, cryopreservation, genome editing, human disease modeling, gene expression and profiling, protein characterization and purification, infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance and drug discovery, disease biomarkers, computational sciences, vaccine designs, natural product, nanotech research, biosafety and biosecurity.
