NUMS Department of Biotechnology

HOD’s Message:

On behalf of the faculty and staff, I warmly welcome you to the Department of Biotechnology.

At the Department of Biotechnology, National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS), we are committed to fostering an enabling and intellectually vibrant environment where students and collaborators can engage in multidisciplinary research. Our aim is to achieve groundbreaking discoveries and develop innovative solutions that contribute to improving human health and benefiting society at large.

The department offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs in emerging areas of biotechnology. With a dedicated team of core faculty, complemented by affiliate faculty from diverse biological science disciplines, we provide extensive opportunities for academic supervision, mentoring, and collaborative research. Our faculty members are recipients of various national and institutional research grants, which significantly support and enhance student research activities.

Our teaching and research programs are designed to promote merit, diversity, and inclusion, values that are deeply embedded in our academic practices. Our campuses—KHINAMS at Chak Shahzad, Islamabad, and the NUMS Institute of Advanced Studies and Research (NIASR), a state-of-the-art laboratory complex located at Abid Majeed Road, The Mall, Rawalpindi—offer exceptional facilities for learning and conducting cutting-edge research.

Furthermore, students benefit from strong institutional support through the Office of the Dean, MDS, and the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC), particularly in securing funding for MS and PhD research, as well as in patenting and commercialization initiatives.

We are delighted to welcome you as a prospective student or collaborator to our academic community. I encourage you to explore our degree programs, research areas, facilities, and the profiles of our accomplished faculty as you begin your journey with us.

Dr. Aman Karim,

Associate Professor and Head of the Department

Programs:
Future Programs:

The Department of Public Health will soon offer the following academic programs:

  • BS Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology
  • MS Bioanalytical Chemistry
  • PhD Biotechnology
Research facilities:

At NUMS, the Department of Biotechnology nurtures a research culture where curiosity meets cutting-edge science. Our facilities are not just rooms filled with machines—they are spaces where ideas take shape, experiments come alive, and students learn by doing. With access to advanced instrumentation, young scientists gain hands-on experience in the very techniques that define modern biotechnology, nanomedicine, and natural product drug discovery.

  1. Biotechnology Core Research: Students step into labs equipped with Real-Time PCR machines, multiple PCR thermal cyclers, and gel documentation systems—the backbone of molecular biology and genetic engineering. High-speed centrifuges, CO incubators, and biosafety cabinets provide the environment needed for safe and precise cell culture work. Supporting equipment such as autoclaves and water baths ensure that every experiment is carried out under rigorous standards of reliability and reproducibility.
  2. Nanomedicine Research: In the realm of nanotechnology, our researchers work with the Particle Size & Surface Charge Analyzer (Zetasizer) to characterize nanoparticles, while digital rheometers and electrospinning machines allow them to design and test innovative nanomaterials. Instruments like the UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Multiskan Sky spectrometer, and lyophilizer (-80°C freeze dryer) extend capabilities from preparation to long-term preservation, enabling breakthroughs in drug delivery and biomedical applications.
  3. Natural Product Drug Discovery: For those exploring nature’s pharmacy, our labs house High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) systems, rotary evaporators, and Soxhlet extraction units to isolate and profile bioactive compounds. Spectroscopic tools such as the UV analyzer and photometer 7100 UV-VIS, alongside automatic cell counters, support biological evaluation of medicinal extracts. Together, these facilities empower researchers to transform traditional knowledge into modern therapeutic discoveries.
