Dr Adeela Bashir, Assistant Professor at NUMS Department of Health Professions Education (NDHPE), delivered a talk at the international FIGO LDI Reach symposium on 7 September 2024 at Abbottabad International Medical College arranged by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Pakistan (SOGP). This critical symposium drew leading gynecologists from across the country and offered a platform for sharing insights, research, and strategies to improve maternal and child health.
The symposium started with a welcome address by Prof Nasreen Abbasi. President SOGP, Prof Aziz un Nisa Abbasi, updated SOGP and FIGO LDI activities. The core theme, "Saving Mothers and Emergency Obstetrics," tackled urgent challenges in maternal health. It introduced the theme of sustainability and climate-competent care to make participants aware of the impact of environmental hazards. These hazards posed a severe threat to human health and disproportionately affected mothers and children.
Dr Adeela Bashir, a life member of SOGP, emphasized the importance of adopting sustainability within healthcare practices, particularly in Obstetrics and Gynecology Units. The discussion highlighted how environmental hazards like climate change and pollution impact maternal and fetal health. It showcased practical solutions, including implementing Zero Waste practices in hospitals and healthcare systems. This approach encourages departments and healthcare providers to minimize medical waste and reduce their environmental footprint while delivering essential care.
President SOGP highly appreciated the well-received talk by the audience, with many expressing interest in adopting eco-friendly solutions and promoting climate resilience in maternal care. As a member of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) and the South Asia Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology (SAFOG), SOGP is pivotal in advancing women's health in Pakistan and internationally. The speaker called on SOGP to leverage its influential position to educate future medical practitioners and gynecologists on climate-competent care. Obstetricians and gynecologists can be crucial in addressing these environmental challenges by promoting patient awareness and advocating for eco-friendly policies.
The speaker also introduced the Zero Waste Alliance Pakistan (ZWAP), an academic-led coalition of leading Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from across Pakistan, with NUMS being one of its founding members. SOGP and ZWAP have the potential to collaborate to create a zero-waste future for the country.
The symposium underscored the urgency of addressing both immediate medical concerns in maternal health and the long-term threats posed by environmental degradation.
SOGP members uniquely position themselves to advocate for and implement sustainable, climate-conscious care across the country, both within clinical practices and at the policy level. This event called obstetricians and gynecologists to action, emphasizing their essential role in combating environmental threats and protecting the health of future generations.
