One of the selected NUMS students, under the Millennium Fellowship Program – Class of 2023 by United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), addressed multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by initiating a project titled “Debunking Common Nutrition Myths.” This project aligned with SDG - 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG - 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing), SDG - 4 (Quality Education), and SDG – 17 (Partnership for the Goals).
To raise awareness, three awareness sessions were conducted on November 1st, 3rd & 20th, 2023 at Rawalpindi Women University, NUMS, and Muslim Youth (MY) University, Islamabad. Dr. Abdul Momin Rizwan, Assistant Professor Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, and Ms. Sumiya Nauman, Manager of Quality Assurance/Focal Person for the Millennium Fellowship Program, mentored the project. A total of 163 participants, including faculty and students, actively participated in the sessions. The presenters included Dr. Abdul Momin, Assistant Professor, NUMS Department of Nutrition and Dietetics (NDND), and NDND Students, Ms. Asma Iqbal, Roha Raheel, Muskan Israr, and Aimen Ali.
The program aimed to address prevalent misconceptions regarding nutrition by providing accurate information and promoting healthy eating habits. It sought to empower students with evidence-based knowledge for informed dietary choices and overall well-being. The sessions commenced with an overview of nutrition's importance, followed by debunking various nutrition myths. Interactive question and answer sessions facilitated open dialogue and clarification on specific nutrition concerns. Post-session discussions reflected a positive response, with participants expressing intentions to adopt healthier dietary habits. These interactive sessions fostered a deeper understanding of nutrition and encouraged informed decision-making regarding dietary choices.
In their early years, children face numerous challenges due to their youth and limited life experiences, often relying heavily on caregivers. Neglected children within this demographic are especially susceptible to various adversities, such as mistreatment, abuse, and poverty, as well as lacking access to crucial resources necessary for their overall development.
The "Giving Voice to Unheard Children" initiative, led by Ms Salma Naz Khattak and a team of dedicated volunteer students, aims to address these issues. Through a meticulously designed program, the initiative seeks to break the cycle of silence and neglect surrounding marginalized children by organizing specialized learning sessions focused on improving communication skills. Muhammad Ateeb Faheem and his fellow students have conducted these sessions, which commenced with empowering activities on November 4th & 5th, 2023. Additional activities, such as cross-cultural exchanges and debating sessions, were strategically implemented to foster critical thinking and engagement. The project also includes team-building exercises to promote collaboration, culminating in feedback sessions to ensure continuous improvement.
These efforts help create a positive learning environment within the orphanage and foster strong bonds between volunteers and participants, encouraging individual growth and self-expression.

One of the most important aspects of overall health of an individual is a good nutritional status. One of the most crucial factors influencing an individual's overall health is maintaining a good nutritional status. Consequently, the significance of nutrition education and awareness cannot be overstated in terms of sensitizing the community to healthy eating habits and adopting a healthier lifestyle. Generally, there is a limited understanding of nutrition and health-related knowledge among the masses in Pakistan. Therefore, it is imperative to raise awareness about the importance of a balanced diet, physical activity, stress reduction, and sleep quality.
With this in mind, Dr. Abdul Momin, Assistant Professor at the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, NUMS, conducted three distinct nutrition awareness and community outreach sessions at Mobilink Microfinance Bank Limited (MMBL), F-8, Islamabad. Two of these sessions were centered around the topic "Healthy Lifestyle in the Corporate World – Is it Possible?" and were attended by more than 90 MMBL employees each.
The third session, tailored specifically to meet the needs of the janitorial staff, took place at MMBL, Koral Head Office, Judicial Colony, Islamabad. Titled "Budget-Friendly Meal Planning," this session was attended by over 40 janitorial staff. The session was designed with a focus on the principles of "Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion," addressing how underserved community females and males could fulfill their daily caloric and nutritional requirements on a tight budget.
These nutrition awareness sessions and community outreach programs align with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). The NUMS Department of Nutrition & Dietetics is committed to continuing such awareness sessions and community outreach programs in the twin cities and beyond.
