VICE-CHANCELLOR NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

LT GEN WASIM ALAMGIR, HI (M), (RETD)

Professor Wasim Alamgir was commissioned in Army Medical Corp in Dec 1985 after passing out from Army Medical College Rawalpindi. He did his internship in Military and Combined Military Hospital Rawalpindi followed by a two-year stint in AJK near Line of Control as officer in charge of an Advanced Dressing station and as an RMO of a deployed Infantry Battalion. He completed his Fellowship training in General Medicine from Military Hospital Rawalpindi and CMH Quetta between 1990 to 1993.

He qualified his FCPS in 1994 and served in small military hospitals in NWFP and then Federally Administered Tribal Areas till 1999. He trained in London Hammersmith Hospital for next two and a Half years, while there he obtained his MRCP UK and MRCP Ireland in 2000, and also qualified a Diploma in Cardiology with a mark of distinction from Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine. On return to Pakistan he served as Consultant Neurologist in two large Aye Class Military Hospitals in Kharian and Multan from 2002 to 2010. He was appointed Head Department of Neurology MH Rawalpindi in 2010 and was instrumental in starting a stroke service with thrombolysis as one of the pioneer institutions.

He was conferred with FRCP in 2012 followed by FACP. He remained Head Department of Medicine CMH Quetta from 2013 to 2016 and was a key team member in organising mass disaster and trauma response services during the upsurge of terrorist activities in the city. He was posted to Military Hospital Rawalpindi and made Advisor Neurology to Surgeon General in 2016. He was again instrumental in visualising and practically setting up a Neuro-interventional centre in MH. During COVID pandemic, he was the Head Department of Medicine in PEMH Rawalpindi and was involved in developing protocols and hands on management of the patients in the largest COVID treatment centre in Federal Capital Territory and Pakistan Army. He subsequently was promoted and served as Director General Medicine in GHQ Rawalpindi in 2021.

He is a Professor of Medicine and Neurology and is a member of faculty of Neurology for College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan. He is an examiner for Membership exam for Royal College of Physicians and is a part of editorial board of multiple scientific journals.

He was promoted as Lieutenant General in January 2022 and has worked as VC NUMS since. His focus remains on promoting education and research in all healthcare domains especially Paramedic and Nursing training, along with investment in area of Clinical Trials, Data Mining in Healthcare field, Indigenous Vaccine Development, Plasma Derived Medicinal Products and promotion of pharmaceutical industry by developing a BA/BE Centre. The General has been awarded Hilal-i- Imtiaz (Military) in recognition of his meritorious services.

MAJ GEN FARRUKH SAEED, HI(M), (RETD)

Pro Vice-Chancellor National University Of Medical Sciences

Maj Gen Farrukh Saeed, HI(M), (Retd) joined the National University of Medical Sciences as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academics) on 13 July 2023.

A Physician and Gastroenterologist by profession, he graduated from Army Medical College Rawalpindi in 1987. He is a fellow of the College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan, Royal College of Physicians – Edinburgh (UK), and fellow American College of Physicians. He remained Councilor of the College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan.

The General Officer has remained the Principal of Army Medical College, the Premier Medical College in the country, besides being the Advisor in Gastroenterology, Head of the Department of Medicine PEMH, and DG Medicine at GHQ before joining NUMS.

Once accomplished these projects will further elevate NUMS position at the national and international level besides inspiring others to emulate its example in the field of academics and research.      

NUMS bears a heavy responsibility to ensure quality of its educational offerings and training, innovation and pertinence in its research to serve the country and humanity at large. All those who join NUMS will be provided equal opportunities to grow as rounded individuals, taking merit and transparency as our guiding principles. MAJ GEN MUHAMMAD SALMAN ASHRAF, HI(M), SI(M), (RETD)

Pro Vice-Chancellor National University of Medical Sciences

Major General Dr. Muhammad Salman Ashraf (Retd) has had a distinguished 35-year career in the Army Medical Corps, with vibrant senior management experience in high-level strategic and operational roles within military healthcare.

As Deputy Surgeon General/ Director General of Medical Services of the Pakistan Army, Dr. Ashraf oversaw the strategic management of healthcare across the Army, Air Force, and Navy. His responsibilities included medical training, HR management, logistical support, and quality assurance for Pakistan’s military healthcare facilities. He led disaster response efforts, provided medical support for UN peacekeeping missions and Hajj operations, and spearheaded the Army’s COVID-19 response, including vaccination and Anti Covid Guidelines. He also implemented an IT-based Hospital Management System. As Commandant of the Armed Forces Post Graduate Medical Institute, he led the training and development of medical, dental, and nursing officers in the military; he revamped the MSc Hospital Administration program to align with modern management practices, enhancing its relevance and effectiveness along with supervising training of doctors in all medical, surgical and dental specialties.

As the Commandant and Deputy Commandant of several military hospitals, Dr. Ashraf inspired his teams to deliver top-quality healthcare by providing modern equipment, medicines, and infrastructure. His leadership spanned multiple domains, including HR, quality assurance, and financial management, while ensuring evidence-based best medical practices.

Dr. Ashraf also served as a Specialist in Aerospace Medicine, ensuring the health and safety of military pilots. He also served three years in the Persian Gulf, supporting allied forces during the Gulf War, and conducted several Medevac missions.

Major General Dr. Ashraf has demonstrated exceptional leadership prowess, professional brilliance, and transformational vision throughout his career. His strategic insight and fostering a culture of innovation and excellence have impacted the Army Medical Corps, improving healthcare delivery and organizational performance.

In recognition of his exceptional service, Dr. Ashraf received two national honors from Pakistan: The Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) and the Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Military) and International Commendations.

MAJ GEN SALEEM AHMED KHAN, HI(M), (RETD)

Executive Director (Research & Commercialization)

Saleem Ahmed Khan is a Professor and senior consultant in hematology with a special interest in transfusion medicine. He graduated from Army Medical College Rawalpindi in 1983 (3rd MBBS course) and was commissioned as Captain in the Pakistan Army. After completing his house job at CMH Lahore, he served as a General Duty Medical Officer and underwent four-year hematology training at AFIP/CMH/MH, earning his FCPS in 1994. Mr. Saleem served in Bosnia on a UN mission in 1995 and in Saudi Arabia (1997-2000). On return to the country, he served as a specialist and instructor at service hospitals and institutes. He commanded AFIT Rawalpindi (2009-2012), transforming it into a state-of-the-art blood transfusion facility.

As a HoD hematologist at AFIP, he developed molecular and forensic sciences departments. He earned his PhD in hematology from Riphah International University in 2013 and was awarded FRCP (Edin) in 2015. A supervisor and examiner for M.Phil, FCPS, and PhD in hematology, he has trained numerous residents and presented extensively at national and international forums. Promoted to Major General in 2016, he served as Principal of Army Medical College, transforming it into the top medical school certified by PMDC.

A former PMDC councilor, he is currently Dean of Hematology CPSP and President of the Pakistan Society of Hematology. After retiring in 2020, he joined NUMS as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academics) and, since July 2023, has served as Executive Director of Research & Commercialization at NIASR. He is heading upcoming NUMS projects, including the Bio Equivalence Center, Clinical Trials Unit, Plasma Derived Medicinal Products, and Biologics Manufacturing Center. For his meritorious services, he was awarded Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military).
