Professor Wasim Alamgir was commissioned in Army Medical Corp in Dec 1985 after passing out from Army Medical College Rawalpindi. He did his internship in Military and Combined Military Hospital Rawalpindi followed by a two-year stint in AJK near Line of Control as officer in charge of an Advanced Dressing station and as an RMO of a deployed Infantry Battalion. He completed his Fellowship training in General Medicine from Military Hospital Rawalpindi and CMH Quetta between 1990 to 1993.
He qualified his FCPS in 1994 and served in small military hospitals in NWFP and then Federally Administered Tribal Areas till 1999. He trained in London Hammersmith Hospital for next two and a Half years, while there he obtained his MRCP UK and MRCP Ireland in 2000, and also qualified a Diploma in Cardiology with a mark of distinction from Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine. On return to Pakistan he served as Consultant Neurologist in two large Aye Class Military Hospitals in Kharian and Multan from 2002 to 2010. He was appointed Head Department of Neurology MH Rawalpindi in 2010 and was instrumental in starting a stroke service with thrombolysis as one of the pioneer institutions.
He was conferred with FRCP in 2012 followed by FACP. He remained Head Department of Medicine CMH Quetta from 2013 to 2016 and was a key team member in organising mass disaster and trauma response services during the upsurge of terrorist activities in the city. He was posted to Military Hospital Rawalpindi and made Advisor Neurology to Surgeon General in 2016. He was again instrumental in visualising and practically setting up a Neuro-interventional centre in MH. During COVID pandemic, he was the Head Department of Medicine in PEMH Rawalpindi and was involved in developing protocols and hands on management of the patients in the largest COVID treatment centre in Federal Capital Territory and Pakistan Army. He subsequently was promoted and served as Director General Medicine in GHQ Rawalpindi in 2021.
He is a Professor of Medicine and Neurology and is a member of faculty of Neurology for College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan. He is an examiner for Membership exam for Royal College of Physicians and is a part of editorial board of multiple scientific journals.
He was promoted as Lieutenant General in January 2022 and has worked as VC NUMS since. His focus remains on promoting education and research in all healthcare domains especially Paramedic and Nursing training, along with investment in area of Clinical Trials, Data Mining in Healthcare field, Indigenous Vaccine Development, Plasma Derived Medicinal Products and promotion of pharmaceutical industry by developing a BA/BE Centre. The General has been awarded Hilal-i- Imtiaz (Military) in recognition of his meritorious services.
Maj Gen Farrukh Saeed, HI(M), (Retd) has joined National University of Medical Sciences as Pro Vice Chancellor (Academics) on 13 July 2023.
A Physician and Gastroenterologist by profession, he graduated from Army Medical College Rawalpindi in 1987. He is a fellow of College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan, Royal College of Physicians – Edinburgh (UK) and fellow American College of Physicians. He remained Councilor of College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan.
The General Officer has remained Principal of Army Medical College, the premier Medical College of the country, besides being the Advisor in Gastroenterology; Head Department of Medicine PEMH and DG Medicine at GHQ before joining NUMS.
Major General Dr. Muhammad Salman Ashraf (Retd) has had a distinguished 35-year career in Army Medical Corps, with very rich senior management experience in high-level strategic and operational roles within military healthcare.
As Deputy Surgeon General / Director General Medical Services of the Pakistan Army, Dr. Ashraf oversaw the strategic management of healthcare across the Army, Air Force, and Navy. His responsibilities included medical training, HR management, logistical support, and quality assurance for Pakistan's military healthcare facilities. He led disaster response efforts, provided medical support for UN peacekeeping missions and Hajj operations, and spearheaded the Army’s COVID-19 response, including vaccination and Anti Covid Guidelines. He also implemented IT-based Hospital Management System.
As Commandant of the Armed Forces Post Graduate Medical Institute, he led the training and development of medical, dental, and nursing officers in the military. He revamped the MSc Hospital Administration program to align with modern management practices, enhancing its relevance and effectiveness along with supervising training of doctors in all medical, surgical and dental specialties.
As the Commandant and Deputy Commandant of several military hospitals, Dr. Ashraf inspired his teams to deliver top-quality healthcare by providing modern equipment, medicines, and infrastructure. His leadership spanned multiple domains, including HR, quality assurance, financial management while ensuring evidence based best medical practices.
Dr. Ashraf also served as a Specialist in Aerospace Medicine, ensuring the health and safety of military pilots. He also served for three years in the Persian Gulf, supporting allied forces during the Gulf War and conducted a number of Medevac missions.
Throughout his career, Major General Dr. Ashraf demonstrated exceptional leadership prowess, professional brilliance, and transformational vision. With his strategic insight and by fostering a culture of innovation and excellence, he has made a lasting impact on the Army Medical Corps, improving healthcare delivery and organizational performance.
In recognition of his exceptional service, Dr. Ashraf received two national honors from Pakistan: the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) and the Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Military) in addition to International Commendations.
