NCL proactively identifies the importance of up-to-the-minute concepts to educate and prepare NUMS workforce from different walks of life.

The seminar on “Medicinal Plant Cultivation in Pakistan: Opportunities, Challenges, and Sustainable Pathways” was efficiently organized by the NUMS Center for Lifelong Learning (NCL), in collaboration with the NUMS Department of Humanities and Sciences (NDHS), on 18th December, 2025 at NUMS PWD Campus.

The speaker, Dr. Sayed Afzal Shah, Assistant Professor (NUMS Department of Biological Sciences), highlighted Pakistan’s rich biodiversity and favorable climatic conditions that support the cultivation of a wide range of medicinal plant species with growing national and international demand. He emphasized key opportunities such as income diversification for small farmers, rural employment generation, export potential, and the development of value-added products including herbal teas, extracts, essential oils, and pharmaceutical raw materials. All in all, the seminar was a success attended by ‘45’ participants, including 06 faculty members, 03 administrative staff, and 36 students.

The key challenges discussed revolved around limited farmer awareness, lack of technical knowledge, insufficient research, poor access to quality planting material, weak market linkages, and regulatory and certification barriers. Moreover, the session highlighted the role of medicinal plants in managing chronic illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, digestive disorders, and stress-related conditions, emphasizing the need to scientifically validate traditional knowledge and integrate it with modern healthcare systems.

The seminar concluded by underscoring the possibility of sustainable pathways through capacity building, strengthened research and extension services, public–private collaboration, and environmentally friendly farming practices. The content of the seminar effectively aligned with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 15 (Life on Land); thereby highlighting the role of medicinal plant cultivation in sustainability.
