NCL ensures customized and exclusively designed trainings for all university personnel in different domains.

A one-day training workshop by NUMS Center for Lifelong Learning on Professional Writing and Digital Etiquette was conducted on 28 April 2026 at KHINAMS for the administrative staff of the National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS). The workshop was attended by 20 participants representing various administrative departments, demonstrating the institution’s commitment to strengthening professional communication competencies within its workforce.

The session was facilitated by Dr. Misbah Obaid, Assistant Professor at the College of Nursing (KHINAMS), who holds a PhD in Linguistics. As a subject expert, she delivered an insightful and structured session focusing on the principles of effective professional writing and the application of appropriate digital etiquette in contemporary organizational contexts.

The workshop encompassed several critical components of professional communication. A key focus area was email writing, wherein participants were apprised of the standard protocols, including the appropriate use of subject lines, formal tone, logical structuring of content, and common pitfalls to avoid in professional correspondence.

In addition, the session addressed the use of instant messaging within the workplace. Emphasis was placed on maintaining professionalism, clarity, and appropriateness of tone while communicating through digital platforms, despite their inherently informal nature.

The workshop further covered formal communication practices, providing guidance on drafting official correspondence, reports, and internal communications in accordance with professional standards. This segment underscored the importance of precision, coherence, and respect in written communication.

To reinforce learning outcomes, the workshop incorporated structured hands-on group activities. Participants engaged in practical exercises, including drafting professional emails, critically reviewing sample communications, and participating in role-based scenarios. These activities facilitated experiential learning and enhanced participant engagement.

The workshop also contributed to the advancement of key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:

SDG 4 (Quality Education), through the promotion of continuous professional development

SDG 5 (Gender Equality), by ensuring inclusive participation and equitable learning opportunities

SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), by enhancing workplace competencies

SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), by promoting effective, transparent, and accountable communication practices

In conclusion, the workshop was conducted in a highly organized and interactive manner and was well received by all participants. Feedback indicated a significant improvement in participants’ understanding and application of professional writing and digital communication skills.

          

A Five-Day Training Workshop on “Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Psychology” was fruitfully organized by the NUMS Center for Lifelong Learning (NCL), in collaboration with the NUMS Department of Psychology (NDP) from 17th December 2025 to 14th January 2026, in order to introduce the participants to the fundamentals of machine learning and its applications in psychological research and practice. The training workshop integrated theoretical concepts with practical, hands-on training using Python programming.

The training was conducted, every Wednesday, under the expert facilitation of Dr. Nadeem Malik, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Sciences, Fatima Jinnah Women University at KHINAMS (Islamabad). A total of 15 participants from the NUMS Department of Psychology zealously attended the said workshop.

Participants were introduced to core concepts of AI and machine learning, including key definitions, techniques, and real-world applications relevant to psychology. The training workshop also covered the fundamentals of Python programming, with emphasis on variables, functions, loops, and essential data structures for data analysis.

The workshop guided participants through the complete machine learning workflow, including data preprocessing and normalization, data sterilization, and the application of machine learning models. Key models covered during the extensive workshop included regression, cluster analysis, risk assessment, and neural networks.

Hands-on practical sessions were conducted using Anaconda, enabling participants to analyze datasets, develop machine learning models, and effectively interpret results.

By the end of the workshop, participants developed a foundational understanding of machine learning concepts, Python programming, and their applications in psychology. The training contributed to capacity building in digital and analytical skills, supporting evidence-based psychological research and innovation.

This training workshop aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically: SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being, by enhancing psychological research and mental health assessment through AI-driven methods; SDG 4 – Quality Education, by promoting advanced technical and analytical skills through hands-on AI and Python training; and SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, by encouraging innovation and the use of emerging technologies in psychological research.

Prof. Dr. Shania Khalid (Acting Dean SSH), expressed her gratitude to the External Expert – Dr. Nadeem Malik for sharing his current and useful knowledge with the participants. Dr. Ayesha Rauf (HOD, NDHPE) graced the event as Chief Guest and presented a Certificate of Contribution and NUMS Souvenir to the learned workshop resource person.

          

The One-Day Workshop on “Harnessing AI to Foster Research and Innovation in Academia” was successfully organized by the NUMS Center for Lifelong Learning (NCL), in collaboration with the NUMS Department of Biological Sciences (NDBS) on 11th December 2025, in order to explore the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in advancing academic research, teaching, and innovation. The training event brought together faculty members, researchers, and students to discuss how AI-driven tools are reshaping knowledge creation, data analysis, and scholarly collaboration across disciplines. International Experts highlighted the use of AI in research processes, including literature review automation, data mining, predictive analytics, and advanced modeling, emphasizing its role in enhancing research efficiency, supporting evidence-based decision-making, and accelerating innovation.

The workshop featured distinguished external speakers, including Prof. Dr. Usman Qamar, Professor of Data Science and Generative AI at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, Saudi Arabia, and recipient of the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, who has published over 55 impact-factor journal articles and authored influential textbooks on AI and data science; Dr. Antonello Lorenzini, Associate Professor at the University of Bologna, Italy, whose research integrates ageing biology with AI to study longevity and develop text-mining platforms such as TextAlchemy; Mr. Francesco Peironi, a Master’s graduate in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Bologna; and Mr. Roshan Saleem Butt, a final-year PhD candidate in AI at the University of Bologna specializing in natural language processing for estimating healthy life expectancy. Mr. Butt facilitated the workshop in person, while the other speakers shared their knowledge and expertise online.

This workshop marked the first international outreach activity – in respect of onboarding international facilitators by NCL – thereby materializing the Phase III of the NUMS Outreach Policy. A total of ‘70’ participants attended the workshop, including 31 online attendees. Discussions underscored both the opportunities and challenges of AI in academia, including ethical considerations, data privacy, and the need for technical skills. Participants emphasized sustainable integration of AI through institutional policies, capacity building, and infrastructure investment, highlighting its potential to enhance research productivity, foster innovation, and strengthen academic research ecosystems. The training activity aligned with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Prof. Dr. Aisha Mohyuddin (Dean MDS), expressed her gratitude to the Guest Speaker – Mr. Roshan Saleem Butt for sharing his advantageous knowledge with the participants, and presented him with a Certificate of Contribution and NUMS Souvenir.

In order to equip participants with skills to conduct high-quality systematic reviews and write academic articles effectively, NUMS Center for Lifelong Learning (NCL) and NUMS Department of Psychology (NDP) collaborated for a two-day workshop on Systematic Review for Social Sciences & Article Writing for Publication organized at the NUMS PWD Campus on 25th & 26th August 2025, respectively. The workshops were designed to enhance the research capacity of participants to conduct systematic reviews in the field of social sciences, as well as to develop high-quality manuscripts suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

A total of 30 participants attended the workshops, including researchers, faculty members, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and professionals engaged in academic writing and research dissemination. The sessions were facilitated by Dr. Yasir Mehmood, Associate Professor and Head of Humanities at NUMS, whose expertise and commitment contributed significantly to the success of the program. His sessions were not only insightful but also highly engaging, combining theoretical knowledge with practical exercises. His willingness to address individual queries and provide personalized guidance greatly enriched the learning experience of all participants and was deeply appreciated by the organizing team and attendees alike.

The first day of the workshop was dedicated to Systematic Review Methodologies. Participants were introduced to the principles of systematic reviews, strategies for searching academic databases, processes for screening and data extraction, and tools for critical appraisal of research evidence. Practical exercises were included to ensure that participants could apply these methods in their own work. The second day of the workshop concentrated on Academic Writing and Publication Strategies. It provided detailed guidance on structuring research articles, referencing and citation practices, plagiarism awareness, responding to reviewers, and preparing manuscripts for submission to international journals. Writing exercises and case discussions allowed participants to practice these skills in a supportive environment.

The workshops were highly interactive and well-received. Participants appreciated the balance between theoretical input and practical exercises and emphasized the value of hands-on activities and case studies. They expressed that the sessions enhanced their confidence in conducting systematic reviews and in preparing manuscripts for academic publication.

Overall, the two-day workshop successfully achieved its objectives by enhancing participants’ research and writing skills, creating a platform for knowledge sharing, and fostering academic networking. It is expected to contribute significantly to improving the quality and visibility of research outputs in the social sciences. The initiative also directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals – particularly SDG 4: Quality Education – by strengthening the capacity of researchers in systematic review and academic writing, and by promoting lifelong learning and academic excellence.

          

In today’s fast paced world of research advancements, application of complex software programs for research purposes in inevitable. In order to explore the utilization of Python in Psychological Research, NUMS Center for Lifelong Learning (NCL) and NUMS Department of Psychology (NDP) joined hands for a beneficial outreach venture for students and faculty members at NUMS. The one-day workshop titled “Python for Psychological Research – Beginner Level” was successfully organized by NCL, in collaboration with NDP, on 22nd August, 2025 at NUMS PWD Campus with the objective of introducing students and early-career researchers in psychology to the fundamental concepts of programming in Python. The workshop highlighted the utility of Python in psychological research, including data management, analysis, and visualization.

The well-versed guest speaker, Ms. Tayyaba Jahangir – Certified Python Trainer, familiarized the participants with Python programming environment, basic Python syntax, data structures, and operations. All in all, the workshop was eagerly attended by 27 participants from NDP and 4 online attendees from Turkey and Malaysia, including undergraduate and postgraduate psychology students, early-career researchers, and NUMS faculty members. The diversity of participants created an engaging environment where individuals could share perspectives on integrating computational tools into psychological research.

This workshop also marked the first international outreach initiative by the NUMS Center for Lifelong Learning. By welcoming participants from diverse academic and geographical backgrounds, NCL successfully extended its educational and research engagement beyond national boundaries. The event represented a significant milestone in NCL’s vision to foster global collaborations, contributing to NUMS’ academic recognition and visibility worldwide. Also, the participants provided positive feedback, highlighting the workshop’s clarity, practical orientation, and relevance. Many expressed interest in attending an advanced-level workshop focused on experimental design, statistical modeling, and machine learning applications in psychology.

In order to ensure educational fairness, University Diversity Officer (NUMS) worked alongside NDP faculty to ensure that diversity, equity, and inclusion practices were religiously executed throughout the training session. The training workshop came to an end with a Vote of Thanks by Prof. Dr. Shazia Khalid (Acting Dean, SSH) and Certificate Distribution Ceremony by the Chief Guest, Air Commodore Muhammad Ismail, SI (M), Retired (Consultant QA / Head of NCL & RD Directorate, NUMS).

In celebration of NUMS’ 10th Anniversary, NUMS Department of Public Health (NDPH) in collaboration with NUMS Center for Lifelong Learning (NCL), successfully organized a three-day workshop titled “Health Research Essentials: Data Analysis & Beyond” on May 26, 27, and 29, 2025, aligned with United Nations’ SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) & SDG 4 (Quality Education). The workshop aimed to strengthen the analytical and research capabilities of Public Health students, equipping them to identify health trends, analyze data, and design evidence-based, socially relevant interventions empowering them to become informed professionals capable of addressing real-world health challenges.

Opening day was led by Dr. Raima Asif, Assistant Professor at NDPH, who emphasized the importance of conducting an effective literature review using PubMed and other search engines, as well as managing references with Zotero.

Dr. Ayaz ul Haq, a seasoned academic and corporate trainer, conducted the second and third days of the workshop as facilitator. He has extensive experience in conducting Data Analysis training sessions at over 30 national and international institutes. Dr. Ayaz provided a detailed overview of data analysis in SPSS, including Basic Statistical Analysis, Advanced Statistical Analysis, and Data Interpretation and Reporting. Participants were engaged in practical exercises using real-world datasets and breakout sessions for peer discussion and networking.

Consultant Quality Assurance / Head of NCL & RD Dte, Air Cdre Muhammad Ismail, SI (M) (Retired), was the Chief Guest on the closing day. He commended the dedication of the workshop facilitators, NCL organizers, and applauded the enthusiasm of the BSPH participants, urging them to apply their newly acquired skills to address pressing public health research challenges. Prof. Dr. Uzma Hassan, HoD NDPH, in her vote of thanks, acknowledged the organizing team’s efforts and encouraged students to continue integrating research skills into their academic pursuits and future professional endeavors.

 

Certificates were awarded to the training participants of the three-day workshop, and faculty members and administrative officials of both NUMS Department of Public Health and NUMS Center of Lifelong Learning.

Indeed, this initiative clearly reflects NUMS’ ongoing commitment to nurturing a research-driven academic environment and empowering the next generation of healthcare researchers with the tools needed to lead impactful studies.
