According to The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), ecotourism is defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people and involves interpretation and education”. The three principles of ecotourism dictate that it is non-consumptive/non extractive, creates an ecological conscience and holds eco-centric values and ethics in relation to nature.
HEC Pakistan has included eco-tourism as one of the five key thematic areas for GYM for higher education institutions. NESC and GYM Club aim to ensure that visits to natural areas are made a regular feature of the events Calendar which can help learn from, studying, or engaging in environmentally friendly activities. Such activities support the social and economic growth of the communities as well because these emphasize on knowing nature, its environment, plants, wildlife, and habitats and local culture.
