Data Management Workshop on SPSS & STATA |
1st - 7th Nov, 2018 |
The workshop was conducted at Ejaz Hall, Army Medical College, Rawalpindi by Associate Professor and Head of Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit Dr Oyindamola Bidemi Yusuf, and Senior Lecturer, Dr Joshua Odunayo Akinyemi, Department of Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, College of Medicine, University of IBADAN, Nigeria. Pro Vice Chancellor Maj Gen (R) Muhammad Aslam inaugurated the program and Dean Research and Academic Development, Prof K H Mujtaba Quadri introduced the guests and served as host institution faculty during the week. The workshop covered concepts ranging from Introduction to SPSS and STATA, Principles of statistical inference, Simple and Multiple Linear Regression, ANOVA, ANCOVA, MANOVA, MANCOVA, Survival Analysis and Factor analysis with hands on training and practical case studies. It was co-facilitated in small groups by Clinical research team, NUMS. It was attended by nearly 70 NUMS and its constituent and affiliated institution faculty members. Vice Chancellor, Lt Gen. Imran Majeed thanked the visiting faculty and presented souvenirstothe guests at the end of the conference. |

Launch of ‘ Life and Science’ journal website |

Completion of the first phase of Life and Science Journal and its integration with Open Journal System (OJS). OJS is open-source software for the management of peer-reviewed academic journals. Life and Science website shows all journal issues and their categories. All the research articles would be freely available online through this website. |

Lecture on Biologics and Biosimilars by Prof. Dr. Joachim W. Herzig |

Prof. Dr. Joachim W. Herzig (Ph.D., D.Sc.) from Johannes Gutenberg University, Germany was invited to share his expertise on Biologics, Biological Drugs and Biosimilars. Dr. Herzig also discussed presumed complexities in manufacturing Biologics, Legislations and patient safety regulations pertaining use, test and prescription of Biosimilars and Biologics specifically, in the context of Pakistan. |

Informative session on ‘Dynamics of Polio Eradication in Pakistan’. |

The guest speaker for the session, Brig (Retd) Bashir Ahmed Malik, Pakistan Army’s Technical Focal Person, National Emergency Operation Centre for Polio (NEOC) delivered his talk on ‘Pakistan Polio’s last comfort zone’. He shared the detailed statistics related to polio cases and operations of polio eradication programs at different levels. |

Introduction to the Principles and Practice of Clinical Research (IPPCR) Course Certificate Distribution Ceremony |

This course mainly emphasizes on clinical research including its key concepts, Research process (bio-statistical and epidemiological methods) considerations, study designs, protocol designing, quality assurance, ethical and legal issues, innovation etc. The participants who have successfully completed the NIH certificate exam were awarded with the certificates of completion. NUMS is an approved remote site for the courses offered by NIH Bethesda, USA under Chairmanship of Dean Research and academic development. |

NEB exam |

After successful execution of NEB exam in 2017, NUMS was entrusted by PM&DC the responsibility to conduct NEB exam for this year (2018) too. A total of 3,128 students appeared in the NEB exam this year. This Exam is mandatory under Act of Parliament 2012 for foreign graduates’ Pakistani nationals who are willing to practice medicine in Pakistan. |

The World tuberculosis Day Symposium |

National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) Biogenetic faculty arranged a symposium incompliance with World Health Organization (WHO) events for TB to raise public awarenes and mobilize healthcare providers, scientists and the community, at large, to accelerate the progress in eradicating TB. Distinguished clinicians, scientists, and policymakers were invited to present the gravity of TB disease issue and identify solutions to address the issue at national scale. |

Talk was organized on the topic ‘Innovation & Entrepreneurship in Healthcare’ by Mr. Kamran Saeed, a corporate trainer and consultant with more than 30 years of experience in pharmaceutical and national enterprising organizations. His expertise included strategic envisioning, redefining marketing strategies, field operation management, sales strategies formulation and operational systems. The talk highlighted the need for a paradigm shift in our perceptions about willingness to embrace change. |

Two-day workshop on Qualitative Research |

Dr. Rao Nadeem Alam, Assistant Professor, Anthropology from Quaid e Azam University has conducted the workshop to introduce the participants to the significance of looking at the integrated bio-psycho-social determinants of health and equip them with necessary qualitative research techniques for use in their respective disciplines. A course-pack was developed for the workshop, which covered four major modules comprising of scope and approaches of qualitative inquiry, research designs, data collection methods and data analysis techniques. |

Dr. Kizilbash, M.D. Executive Director at Delta Health(Canada), with post-graduate medical training from Harvard MedicalSchool and extensive experience in clinical drug development delivered a lecture on the methodology of new drug development. He has personally been involved in the successful development of a number of prominent prescription drugs that are being used to treat patients in the United States, Canada and a number of other countries around the world. |

Dr. Danish Bhatti, Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurological Sciences at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. His specialties and interests include Parkinson's Disease, Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery and advanced therapies for Parkinson’s disease. He visited NUMS as a HEC visiting faculty and delivered talks on ‘’Introduction to movement disorder’’, ‘’Clinical Trials in neurological disorders’’, ’’Faculty development in sub-specialty leveraging APPNA Faculty’’, ‘’Brainstorming Neuro- science institute services’’, ‘’App development and device designing’’. He was engaged in various key discussion and brain storming sessions during his visit. |

She also introduced the audience to another side of the spectrum i.e. Autism Savants who have exceptional abilities like long term memory and strong visual, mathematical and technological skills. |
