Data Management Workshop on

SPSS & STATA

1st - 7th Nov, 2018

The workshop was conducted at Ejaz Hall, Army Medical College,

Rawalpindi by Associate Professor and Head of Epidemiology and

Biostatistics Unit Dr Oyindamola Bidemi Yusuf, and Senior Lecturer,

Dr Joshua Odunayo Akinyemi, Department of Epidemiology and

Medical Statistics, College of Medicine, University of IBADAN,

Nigeria. Pro Vice Chancellor Maj Gen (R) Muhammad Aslam

inaugurated the program and Dean Research and Academic

Development, Prof K H Mujtaba Quadri introduced the guests

and served as host institution faculty during the week. The

workshop covered concepts ranging from Introduction to SPSS

and STATA,  Principles of statistical inference, Simple and Multiple

Linear Regression, ANOVA, ANCOVA, MANOVA, MANCOVA,

Survival Analysis and Factor analysis with hands on training and

practical case studies. It was co-facilitated in small groups by

Clinical  research team, NUMS.  It was attended by nearly 70

NUMS and its constituent and affiliated institution faculty members.

Vice Chancellor, Lt Gen. Imran Majeed thanked the visiting faculty

and presented souvenirstothe guests at the end of the conference.

Launch of ‘ Life and Science’  journal website 

29th May, 2018

Completion of the first phase of Life and Science Journal and its

integration with Open Journal System (OJS). OJS is open-source

software for the management of peer-reviewed academic journals.

Life and Science website shows all journal issues and their categories.

All the research articles would be freely available online through

this website.

Lecture on Biologics and Biosimilars

by Prof. Dr. Joachim W. Herzig

Prof. Dr. Joachim W. Herzig (Ph.D., D.Sc.) from Johannes Gutenberg

University, Germany was invited to share his expertise on Biologics,

Biological Drugs and Biosimilars. Dr. Herzig also discussed presumed

complexities in manufacturing Biologics, Legislations and patient

safety regulations pertaining use, test and prescription of Biosimilars

and Biologics specifically, in the context of Pakistan.

Informative session on ‘Dynamics of Polio

Eradication in Pakistan’.

7th May, 2018

The guest speaker for the session, Brig (Retd) Bashir Ahmed Malik,

Pakistan Army’s Technical Focal Person, National Emergency

Operation Centre for Polio (NEOC) delivered his talk on ‘Pakistan

Polio’s last comfort zone’. He shared the detailed statistics related

to polio cases and operations of polio eradication programs at

different levels.

Introduction to the Principles and

Practice of Clinical Research (IPPCR)

This course mainly emphasizes on clinical research including its key

concepts, Research process (bio-statistical and epidemiological

methods) considerations, study designs, protocol designing,

quality assurance, ethical and legal issues, innovation etc.

The participants who have successfully completed the NIH

certificate exam were awarded with the certificates of completion.

NUMS is an approved remote site for the courses offered by NIH

Bethesda, USA under Chairmanship of Dean Research and

academic development.

Workshop on “Data Analysis SPSS”

20th April, 2018 

Hands-on workshop on SPSS for basic and advanced statistical

techniques was arranged for NUMS faculty and Researchers team.

NEB exam

After successful execution of NEB exam in 2017, NUMS was

entrusted by PM&DC the responsibility to conduct NEB exam for

this year (2018) too. A total of 3,128 students appeared in the

NEB exam this year. This Exam is mandatory under Act of

Parliament 2012 for foreign graduates’ Pakistani nationals

who are willing to practice medicine in Pakistan.

The World tuberculosis Day Symposium

30th March, 2018 

National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) Biogenetic faculty

arranged a symposium incompliance with World Health Organization

(WHO) events for TB to raise public awarenes and mobilize

healthcare providers, scientists and the community, at large,

to accelerate the progress in eradicating TB. Distinguished

clinicians, scientists, and policymakers were invited to present

the gravity of TB disease issue and identify solutions to address

the issue at national scale.

Guest lecture by Mr. Kamran Saeed

27th March, 2018

Talk was organized on the topic ‘Innovation & Entrepreneurship

in Healthcare’ by Mr. Kamran Saeed, a corporate trainer and

consultant with more than 30 years of experience in

pharmaceutical and national enterprising organizations.

His expertise included strategic envisioning, redefining

marketing strategies, field operation management,

sales strategies formulation and operational systems.

The talk highlighted the need for a paradigm shift in our

perceptions about willingness to embrace change.

Two-day workshop on Qualitative Research

26th - 27th February, 2018

Dr. Rao Nadeem Alam, Assistant Professor, Anthropology from

Quaid e Azam University has conducted the workshop to

introduce the participants to the significance of looking

at the integrated bio-psycho-social determinants of health

and equip them with necessary qualitative research techniques

for use in their respective disciplines. A course-pack was

developed for the workshop, which covered four major

modules comprising of scope and approaches of qualitative

inquiry, research designs, data collection methods and data

analysis techniques.

Dr. Mehnaz Azra Shafi, University of Texas, MD Anderson

Cancer Center has visited NUMS. During her visit she

was engaged in different discussion and brain storming

session with the Clinical trial team and basic scientists.

Course on Principle of Clinical Pharmacology

17th January, 2018 – 30th June, 2018

(ongoing course)

This course is a lecture series that will highlight the basic

concepts of clinical pharmacology with special emphasis

on Drug development and therapeutics. NUMS is the

approved remote site from Pakistan for this course under

the chairmanship of Dean Research and Academic Development

Prof. Dr. K.H. Mujtaba Quadari.

Dr Mohammad Humayoun Khan, Chairman of Medicine and

Chief of gastroenterology at National Guard Hospital,

Saudi Arabia visited NUMS and shared a very informative

talk with the participants.

Guest Lecture by Dr. Arshi Kizil bash

3rd January, 2018

Dr. Kizilbash, M.D. Medical Director Cipher Pharmaceuticals

& Executive Director Delta Health (Canada) with medical

residency and drug development training at Harvard Medical

School.He has delivered talk on successful development of

a number of prominent prescription drugs contributing to the

treatment of  significant medical conditions in the areas of

cardiovascular disease, pain management and dermatology.

HEC visiting Faculty

(Dr. Danish Bhatti)

28th December, 2017 - 5th January, 2018

Dr. Danish Bhatti, Assistant Professor in the Department of

Neurological Sciences at the University of Nebraska Medical

Center. His specialties and interests include Parkinson's

Disease, Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery and advanced therapies

for Parkinson’s disease. He visited NUMS as a HEC visiting faculty

and delivered talks on ‘’Introduction to movement disorder’’,

‘’Clinical Trials in neurological  disorders’’, ’’Faculty development

in sub-specialty leveraging APPNA Faculty’’, ‘’Brainstorming Neuro-

science institute services’’, ‘’App development and device designing’’. 

He was engaged in various key discussion and brain storming sessions

during his visit.

An Update in Health Profession

19th December, 2017

Amcolians Alumni Association (AAA), in collaboration with Association

of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America (APPNA MERIT)

and APPNA RESA, and National University of Medical Sciences

(NUMS) organized an update in health professions education and

medical updates, hosted by Army Medical College, Rawalpindi. The

meeting brought together leading academic physicians and

educationists from North America and the academic leadership

representing the Medical profession and Higher Education, in Pakistan.

Guest Lecture by Dr Gulfaraz Ahmed

13th December, 2017

Dr Gulfaraz Ahmed former Federal Secretary Petroleum with a

doctorate from Stanford University presented a guest lecture entitled

“Sovereignty of abundance “at NUMS He indicated that the current

century for knowledge economy is ever expanding and there is

transformable energy resource available for harnessing within  Pakistan.

Corruption Awareness Session

12th December, 2017

In lieu of the Anti-Corruption week being celebrated throughout the

country NUMS multidisciplinary sciences team has  organized an

awareness session on “Ethics and Professionalism at Workplace’’ with

an aim to promote awareness amongst the employees of NUMS about

corruption, in conformity with Higher Education Commission directive

to universities.

Open House on Translational Research at NUMS

5th December, 2017

The purpose of the event was to motivate healthcare providers for

research and innovation in the medical field and to promote

collaboration among clinicians and researchers. The participants

were enlightened about innovative ideas, research methodologies

and ongoing research projects at NUMS.

Talk on Autism Spectrum Disorder

28th November, 2017

Ms. Haleema Sadia, Director of Autism Resource Centre Islamabad

and an Autism Specialist at Shifa International Hospital Islamabad

discussed the diverse etiology, screening tools and treatment options

available worldwide and in Pakistan along with the research required

in the field of etiology of this disorder. She also introduced the audience

to another side of the spectrum i.e. Autism Savants who have

exceptional abilities like long term memory and strong visual,

mathematical and technological skills.

Professor Arif Asif, internationally acclaimed Interventional

Nephrologist and researcher, Chair of Medicine and Internal

Medicine Program Director, Jersey Shore Medical Centre,

Hackensack University, USA visited NUMS and delivered

two state-of-the-art lectures on “Creating Innovative Education

programs in our changing Healthcare environment” and “Update

on Interventional Nephrology”.

Antibiotic Awareness Symposium

A symposium on antibiotic awareness entitled “Seek advice:

Think twice” was organized. Eminent scientists, clinicians and

policy makers were invited to grace this event. The event was

organized to highlight the harm caused by unnecessary

consumption of antibiotics.

Professor Magdi Yaqoob, Consultant Nephrologist, Chairman Medical

Council, Barts and the London NHS Trust. He delivered an inspiring

talk on the significance of blend of pure Research and Applied Clinical

Research in kidney disorders (bench to bedside).
