The NUMS Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences (DSBS) held its third meeting of “Samaaj Khayaal”- a monthly series, which aims to transcend disciplinary boundaries, find connections and bring to light issues of social relevance. The session titled “Rumi and Love” was held on September 25th, 2019 at DSBS, NUMS Secretariat. Ms. Humaira Masihuddin, an expert in Criminology, Law and Anthropology and a Senior Trainer for The Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), was invited as a guest speaker to share her passion for the poetry of Rumi. The guest speaker started with a historical perspective of the 13th Century era in which Rumi was born and lived. She then introduced the diverse audience inclusive of the students, teaching faculty and management staff of different departments at NUMS to the poetical intellect of Rumi. Ms. Humaira took the audience to the journey of Rumi and love by rendering beautifulpieces of recitation of the mystical Masnavi. She provided some examples and narrated how the influence of Rumi’s poetry could be seen in the subsequent works of Shakespeare and Iqbal who are renowned in the field of philosophy and literature. Following the speaker’s talk, the audience debated on the differentiation and interconnectedness of Ishq-e-Majazi and Ishq-e-Haqeeqi. It was discussed how Rumi is relevant today and efforts can be made to stay in touch with the mysticism of Rumi.
