The NUMS Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences (DSBS) held its second meeting of “Samaaj Khayaal”, a monthly series, which aims to transcend disciplinary boundaries, find connections and bring to light issues of social relevance. The session titled “Role of Medical Education in Society” was held on August 30th, 2019 at DSBS, NUMS Secretariat. PRO-VC NUMS Maj Gen (R) Dr. Prof. Muhammad Aslam, as the speaker of the session, introduced the multidisciplinary audience to the importance of knowledge not only for economic but also social growth. Looking at societal needs and their incorporation in medical education, he advocated for disaster medicine, emergency medicine, family medicine, sports medicine and environmental medicine, amongst other specialized disciplines. He discussed how medicine is a social and cultural system in which individuals have certain health related beliefs and patterns for conceptualization of diseases which may be different from the professional medical science. This diversity of healers and healing systems in the society, he said, need not to be dismissed as ‘unscientific’ and should be understood in its own cultural context. He commended the undergraduate degree of Social Science of Health offered at NUMS for its linkage to society and health.
