The NUMS Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences (DSBS) held its sixth meeting of “Samaaj Khayaal”, a monthly series, which aims to transcend disciplinary boundaries, find connections and bring to light issues of social relevance. The session titled “Journey through the creation of Pakistan” was held on December 20th, 2019 at DSBS, NUMS. PRO-VC NUMS Maj Gen (R) Dr. Prof. Muhammad Aslam took the multidisciplinary audience back to pre-partition era and guided through the major events and influential personalities in the history that paved way to the creation of Pakistan. The speaker exhibited old photographs and videos of events during Pakistan movement featuring prominent leaders like Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Fatima Jinnah, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi. He also highlighted the active female participation in the political space of that time.
The second half of the lecture focused on the partition and post-partition social and political distress. The speaker narrated the horrors of the survivors in the refugee camps with pictures of starved children and displaced families and scarcity of health resources. The speaker presented information on the name of Pakistan, design and first hoisting of the flag and composition of music and lyrics of the national anthem which contributed to the making of the identity of Pakistan.
Ending the session on a positive note, the speaker highlighted some of the notable achievements of Pakistan which reflect its capabilities like having the world’s largest ambulance network (Edhi), world’s biggest deep sea port (Gwadar), largest irrigation system, famous for sports goods and surgical instruments and highest paved road (Karakoram Highway) to name a few. The speaker concluded the session with the hope that we as a Pakistani nation understand our rich history and learn patience and harmony from yesteryears meaning of sacrifice.
