Samaaj Khayaal: Back Channel Formula and Resolution of Kashmir Conflict

The NUMS Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences (DSBS) held its eighth session of “Samaaj Khayaal”- a monthly series, which aims to transcend disciplinary boundaries, find connections and bring to light issues of social relevance. The session titled “Back Channel Formula and Resolution of Kashmir Conflict” was held on February 27th, 2020 at DSBS, NUMS. Dr. Saeed Rid (Assistant Professor at National Institute of Pakistan Studies, Quaid-e-Azam University) introduced the audience to sensitive yet significant issue of Kashmir.

Starting the discussion with the history of the region and the socio-political landscape of that time, he also highlighted the key persons who worked for the Kashmir Issue. The speaker then discussed the diverse approaches that have been used for the resolution of Kashmir Conflict or issues similar to this like Andorra Model, Owen Dixon Formula, Mubashar Hassan’s Win Win Win Formula or the Mushrraf’s Back Channel Formula to name a few. He interacted with the audience and analyzed whether these strategies reflected a collective wisdom over the years or were out-of-the-box novel resolution techniques.

Following the presentation, the audience comprising of faculty members and students asked the speaker about Kashmiri’s right to self-determination, de-militarization, role of United Nations in dispute and issues around Line of Control (LOC) etc. The students resolved to be aware of the historic and contemporary issues surrounding the Kashmir issue.
