Quality Assurance (QA) Directorate has launched ‘Enhancement in Professional Integrated Communication (EPIC) program at National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS), Rawalpindi, on the lines of nationwide-run, HEC continuous professional development course by the name of Competent Language Usage Essentials (CLUE), an English language competency enhancement course.
The inaugural session for this course was held on 24th May 2018 and the subsequent sessions will take place every Thursday for a period of 12 weeks. The target audience was selected from NUMS Secretariat operational cadre of Assistant Managers that make the backbone of managerial workforce. Pro-VC NUMS, Maj. Gen. (Retd) Muhammad Aslam, Provost QA/HR NUMS, Dr. Mehmood Raza and Director Quality Assurance (QA), Ms. Noor Amna Malik were also present at the occasion.
In his opening remarks, Pro-VC highlighted that through this course it is envisaged that the gap between the input and output of the young managers may be filled. He stressed that it is imperative for the participants to actively seek knowledge from this exercise rather than taking it lightly as it is meant for their capacity building and can prove to be highly beneficial in career building if completed with the same spirit and energy the facilitators are putting in.
Following up on this cue, Provost HR expressed his wish to make EPIC a certificate program in times to come for the betterment of the university personnel. He further added that the inclusion of e-learning model in this course will offer the participants with a unique opportunity to upgrade their computing skills as well.
Director QA added that her Directorate believes and aims to ensure quality across all NUMS’ Directorates and constituent as well as affiliated colleges. The program is the initiation of several integrated quality initiatives that would later involve students, faculty and management skills development programs. She said value addition is the forte of QA Team and therefore, Ms. Noreen Mirza, the course lead is one with a long experience of such training programs and has been a National Resource person at HEC. Dr. Erum Monis and Ms. Sobia Bilal will be the co-facilitators for the course.
The first session included a pre-test taken by the participants to establish a baseline, which would be compared to a post-test in order to assess the level of improvement by the end of the course. The activities enabling the participants to interact with each other to promote use of professional and functional language were also used as an ice breaking tool.
The course focuses on development of confident functional and professional language usage at workplace. Its components include Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing and Grammar (Error Analysis), where fluent speaking and smooth writing skill development will be targeted.
