NIH-NUMS IPPCR Course 2019

The NIH – NUMS Introduction to the Principles and Practice of Clinical Research (IPPCR) course, is a unique blended learning program, with focuses on the spectrum of clinical research and the research process by highlighting epidemiologic and biostatistical methods, study designs, protocol preparation, patient monitoring, quality assurance, ethical and legal issues. It aims to trains registrants on how to effectively and safely conduct clinical research. NUMS is one of the approved remote sites in Pakistan for NIH Bethesda, USA IPPCR and uniquely as a remote site for NIH Principles of Clinical Pharmacology and Bioethics.

The core objectives of the course were to provide an overview of basic biostatistical and epidemiologic methods involved in conducting clinical research, to describe the principles involved in the ethical, legal and regulatory issues in clinical human subject’s research, including the role of Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), principles and issues involved in monitoring patient-oriented research, to describe the infrastructure required in performing clinical research and the steps involved in developing and funding research studies.

Course was divided into four Modules with the duration of seven-twelve session of 1.5 hours each. Topics covered in these modules were study development, clinical trials design, measurement, analyzing and presenting data, Ethical principles, legal issues, FDA product regulation, inclusion of women and children, IRBs Data management, protocol mechanics, NIH review, SOPs, project management, case study report forms, Technology transfer, scientific conduct, health disparities research, team science, disseminating results, Research and Media respectively. This course was targeted to physicians, scientists, medical and dental students, nurses, public health professionals, and others conducting or planning a career in clinical research.

Course Facilitators were Dr Rehma Gilani, Ms Kinza Waqar, Ms Maham Zahid, Mr Danish Hasan Khan, Mr Aqeel Yunus, Noveen Nisar, Musaddiq, Amjad Zaman under the mentorship of Dean Research and academic development, Prof Mujtaba Quadri.

The course commenced on 10th January 2019 with an hour plus interactive sessions conducted every Thursday at AFIMH auditorium. The number of enrolled participants were 64, with 35 NUMS faculty and 25 NUMS constituent/affiliated institutes faculty. This year NIH certified participants were 57. The certificate distributing ceremony was held on 5th July 2019. Pro Vice Chancellor Maj Gen (Retd) Muhammad Aslam and Provost, Dr Mahmood Raza distributed the certificates.
