The faculty, students and staff of NUMS Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences (DSBS) observed World Mental Health Day in October 2019, the theme for this year is Suicide Prevention Awareness. The BS Social Science of Health students under the mentorship of course instructor, Ms.Saira Javed, held a series of awareness sessions at NUMS. They displayed flyers and other promotional material at stalls and spoke to NUMS employees and staff members visiting the stall regarding the danger signs of suicide, quoting statistics from Pakistan and debunking myths and stigma related to mental health. They also highlighted the difference between deliberate self harm and suicide. The prominent slogan raised by students was “Its ok to have mental illness but not ok to leave it untreated”.
The main event was held on October 11th, 2019 at NUMS where a one-hour program included student tableau performances, presentations, poetry and speech related to suicide prevention, focusing on the role of teachers, peers, family members and media in sensitizing the youth regarding mental health issues.
VC NUMS also visited the stall and attended main event. He highly commended the efforts of the students in raising awareness regrading this significant issue.
